7 Reasons Why Sleep Does Wonders For Your Skin

Our skin faces battles every single day, from external factors like pollution, chemicals, and sun damage, and internally from our diet, water consumption and believe it or not, our sleep. We all need good quality sleep every night in order to maintain a youthful, healthy glow... and when we don't, our skin certainly shows it!

Did you know that the skin is an organ? And without treating our body well, our organs suffer. Sleep allows our precious skin to restore and repair itself, helping us look and feel younger and healthier. There’s only so much you can do to hide lackluster skin, so make sure you’re getting enough shut-eye each night!

1. The Stress Shows

Sleep is essential for keeping your hormones balanced, which helps keep you in good spirits and also encourages healthy body functions. Without sleep, the stress hormone known as cortisol increases. A rise in cortisol often makes you feel grumpier and short-tempered.

But cortisol also affects your skin! More stress causes inflammation of the skin, which can make skin feel irritable and blemishes appear. Stress causes the body to go into ‘fight or flight’ because it naturally sees stress as a dangerous threat! Once your body reaches that point, it sends blood and oxygen to the vital organs – the skin, although an organ, is not a vital one. As your body prioritizes the other organs, such as the kidneys and heart, your skin loses color and fullness, making it look dull and lifeless.

2. Exacerbates Skin Conditions

For people who already suffer from conditions such as eczema and dermatitis, a lack of sleep makes the symptoms far worse. Too little sleep increases the sensitivity of the skin, which can cause existing conditions to flare up, and therefore need more treatment.

When the symptoms are exacerbated, such as more severe itching, it can itself disrupt the sleep that you do get. It then becomes a vicious cycle, where being unable to sleep becomes a more permanent problem. On the other hand, if you manage to get into a good sleeping pattern, it should help the symptoms, and in turn, both your sleep and skin will benefit.

3. Immune-related Skin Problems Worsen

The purpose of an immune system is to fight off diseases and unwanted bacteria that enter our body. But for those that suffer from a faulty immune system, poor skin health is often a side effect.

Without sleep, the skin experiences more inflammation than it would otherwise. That inflammation interrupts the body’s ability to regulate the immune system. Psoriasis is one of such immune-related skin problems and is extremely sensitive to inflammation – when it flares up, it reveals the lack of sleep or the increase in stress which comes from bad quality of sleep.

4. Detracts From Natural Beauty

The inflammation that comes from a lack of sleep also causes a break down in collagen and hyaluronic acid. Our skin needs both of these to make it look youthful and smooth, instead of thin and stretchy. So, without collagen and hyaluronic acid, the skin becomes thin, dry and lackluster. The hydration keeps skin from being irritated, so dry skin may even cause new skin conditions that you may not have had before.

5. You Need Hydration

Did you know that when you sleep, it’s not just your insides that are relaxing and getting ready for the next day, but it’s also your skin? Every part of you is working together to prepare you for the day ahead.

Your skin needs that good night’s sleep to replenish itself! When you sleep, the body’s hydration rebalances. Throughout the day, our moisture levels change, due to various lifestyle factors – diet, exercise, sweat, water drank. Throughout the night, while we snooze, the body either recovers the moisture that we need, or it naturally removes the excess moisture.

Too much moisture can result in puffy eyes and dark circles around the eyes, while a lack of moisture often leads to dryness of the skin and more visible wrinkles. You need to give your body the chance to rebalance so that you can look your best the next day!

6. Speeds Up Aging

The moisture imbalance mentioned above can cause the appearance of wrinkles to become worse, because, without hydration, the skin loses plumpness, and instead feels thin and dry. It’s easier for the skin, especially around the eyes and neck where the skin is thinner and more sensitive, to suddenly have more fine lines.

The aging process can be sped up through the lack of growth hormones your body produces, too. Usually, these hormones take action when you’re in deep sleep. What do they do? Well, they repair any damaged skin cells and help reproduce a new, youthful complexion. So, without sleep, the damage to the skin accumulates – damage can mean anything from a small wrinkle to a wound. Sleep is necessary for the skin cells to renew themselves and for the body to heal itself!

7. Weight Gain

Studies have found that not having enough sleep can actually cause weight gain [i]. There a number of theories as to why this happens, but it’s most likely due to habitual behaviors that are associated with tiredness from lack of sleep.

But how does this affect your skin exactly? Well, frequent tiredness can make you want to find energy from another source, which will often be coffee and sugary snacks. Coffee is a dehydrator, which means the skin can become drier if drank in excess. And sugary snacks are a catalyst for breakouts!

If you do feel fatigued, replace the coffee and sugar with water – it can wake up the mind and body, as well as providing the skin with the hydration it needs to build collagen and look healthier!
