A Beginner’s Guide to Mindfulness
In recent months, mindfulness has been the buzzword when it comes to dealing with the hustle and bustle of modern life. From helping us sleep more soundly, being conscious of what we eat, to dealing with challenging situations, learning the art of mindfulness can benefit us in so many ways.
So, what is mindfulness?
In a nutshell, mindfulness is a style of meditation which focuses our thoughts on the present moment. The aim of becoming more mindful is to gain a relaxed, non-judgmental awareness of your thoughts, feelings and present state. It’s said that even just 10 minutes a day can help with your health goals.
How can it benefit you?
Practicing mindful techniques has been proven to improve your quality of sleep, lower your blood pressure and reduce your stress levels. All of these lead to a better mood and heightened energy levels throughout the day. Spending time looking after your mind is just as important as looking after your body.
How can you do it?
You can practice mindfulness in various ways, but ideally it needs to be a steady period where you shut-off your mind from the rest of the world. You need to concentrate on stopping your thoughts from wandering, and becoming aware of the present moment through all of your senses.
You can use an app, like Headpace, to do this, which guides you through various breathing techniques and helps you focus into a state of calm.
Or if apps aren’t for you, then other activities like coloring books, taking a hot bath or practicing yoga will do the trick.
