Best Natural Home Remedies for Removing Plaque
If you’re good at keeping on top of your regular dentist appointments, you’ll know how great it feels after a deep clean when your teeth are free from plaque and tartar.
Plaque can be quite unsightly and ruin a great smile, as well as lead to ailments like gum disease and bad breath. Regular brushing and flossing are important, but sometimes we need an extra helping hand to keep our oral health in tip-top form.
According to the National Institutes of Health, your teeth are prone to plaque build-up 20 minutes after you eat. (1) This bacterial plaque can infect gums and needs to be removed daily in order to keep your mouth healthy.
Keep your mouth healthy and teeth looking dentist-fresh with these natural at-home remedies to remove plaque and tartar:
Clean With Baking Soda:
For years, many people have used baking soda to clean their teeth. It works wonders on plaque, removing any nasties from the surface of the tooth enamel. All you need is a tablespoon of baking soda and a pinch of salt. Dip a damp toothbrush into the mixture and brush as normal. Rinse thoroughly with water and repeat once every couple of weeks.
Not the most pleasant tasting remedy, but certainly effective! Take two tablespoons of vinegar, one tablespoon of salt, and four ounces of water. Mix together and gargle all around your mouth (but do not swallow!). Rinse and repeat every 3 days for best results.
Aloe Vera and Glycerine:
Aloe Vera gel has an endless list of health benefits, including keeping our teeth free from plaque! Take a cup of water, mix in half a cup of baking soda and a teaspoon of Aloe Vera gel. Add a good amount of peppermint essential oil, and a teaspoon of vegetable glycerine. Now, scrub your teeth with the mixture and enjoy whiter, brighter, plaque-free gnashers!
A simpler, easily accessible plaque remover is the humble orange (well, more importantly, its peel!) Rub orange peel directly onto your teeth to fight tartar-building bacteria on the enamel. You can also mash up the peel and apply it to stained areas as a natural stain remover. Leave for a few minutes, rinse off, and you will see noticeably whiter teeth!
Hints and Tips for Plaque Prevention
To avoid the build-up of plaque, to begin with, try and use an electric toothbrush rather than a manual one. Attend regular dentist check-ups and make sure you clean and floss at least twice a day.
If you are a smoker, try and cut down – cigarettes play havoc with your oral health and will accelerate the tartar build-up on your teeth.
Drink plenty of fresh water and keep your diet as varied and balanced as possible!
