Could You Benefit from a Sleep Routine Revamp?
We all know how important it is to get enough sleep, and the effects it can have on us when we don’t. When life gets busy and stressful, our sleep pattern tends to be the first thing that suffers, which creates a vicious cycle of bad sleep, and even worse moods.
Although most of us are aware that 8 hours is optimum for ideal body and brain function, it’s more about the quality of sleep, rather than how long your head’s on the pillow.
There are 3 stages of sleep; light sleep, deep sleep and REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. Your body will cycle through a mix of these sleep stages each night, and all are important for regulating mood, appetite, energy and stress levels. During light sleep, your body processes memories and emotions and your metabolism stabilizes itself. In deep sleep, your body works hard on the growth and repair of your cells, and helps strengthen your immune system. In REM sleep, your brain is very active, but your body will be in complete rest. This is the sleep stage in which you dream and regulate emotions.
Here’s where a sleep overhaul could be your saviour! By hitting the reset button on your night time routine, you can adjust your sleeping habits and start enjoying the benefits of better quality, deeper sleep.
The best way to get back in control of your sleep cycle is to completely re-set your tiredness levels. This means you need to make sure you’re really ready to sleep when it comes to bedtime, so napping in the day is a no-no. If you nap for longer than 30 minutes, your body will slip into deep sleep, making it harder to wake up and harder for you to reach all your sleep cycles at night.
Don’t Sleep-In on the Weekends
Sticking to a regular bed time and wake time helps maintain your sleep cycle. However, we all know that sometimes life gets in the way and we have late nights and cosy lay-ins! Although these are fine in moderation, make sure you don’t over-sleep too much at the weekends, making it harder to drift off on a Sunday night. The more you sleep-in, the more our rhythm is thrown off for the following night!
Ditch the Stimulants
What we eat and drink during the day will have a direct effect on how well we sleep. If you’re relying on caffeine to get you through the day, make sure your last cup is no later than 3pm. It takes 6 hours for caffeine to metabolise through the body, so drinking coffee later in the day will just keep you up that night, making you rely on caffeine the next day, too…. and so on, and so on. The same goes with sugar. It’s a nightmare on your night-time routine. Try and stick to a clean, healthy diet filled with nutritious foods and lots of water.
Snoring partner? Sunlight streaming in? Dripping tap that just won’t stop? All of these things can hinder your chances of falling into a peaceful sleep. Try to adjust your sleep environment to be as dark, quiet and comfortable as possible. Even if it means investing in some earplugs!
