DIY Natural Household Cleaners

Many of us pay a lot of attention to which chemicals and harmful substances are in our personal care products, but neglect to check if our daily household cleaners could be harming us, too! If you’re keen to try some natural and effective household cleaners instead, we’ve got some great recipes you can make from some standard pantry items.

Inexpensive, highly effective, and much less abrasive on your home and health… they are certainly worth a try!

Brass Cleaner

You will need:

  • White vinegar or lemon juice
  • Table salt

To make a great brass cleaner, dampen a sponge with white vinegar or lemon juice, sprinkle on some salt, and let it sit for a minute or two. Lightly rub the brass surface to remove dirt, and then rinse with clean water. Immediately dry and polish with a clean, soft cloth.

All-Purpose Cleaner/Deodorizer

You will need:

  • 4 tablespoons of baking soda
  • 2 pints of warm water

For use on kitchen counters, appliances, inside your refrigerator, or any other surface, the main thing you need is baking soda! It’s a great deodorizer and can also be used to shine stainless steel taps and appliances. Just mix the solution above, and use a sponge to wipe your surfaces.

Glass Cleaner

You will need:

  • 2 cups water
  • ½ cup white or cider vinegar
  • ¼ cup rubbing alcohol 70% concentration
  • 2 drops of orange essential oil (optional)

This works wonders on windows and mirrors! Combine the ingredients above and pour them into a spray bottle. Spray the solution on a paper towel or soft cloth, and then apply to the glass.

Grease Cleaner

You will need:

  • 1 cup white vinegar
  • Few drops of natural liquid soap
  • 1 tablespoon of baking soda
  • Warm water
  • Essential oil (optional)

Mix the ingredients and pour into a spray bottle. Use the essential oil to disguise the smell of the vinegar, and spray onto grease-heavy cookers or appliances.

Scented All-Purpose Cleaner

You will need:

  • One part white vinegar
  • One part water
  • Lemon rind
  • Rosemary or lavender sprigs

Combine the ingredients in a spray bottle, shake, and then let infuse for about a week before using. Once done, the solution will freshen laundry, banish pet smells in carpets and furniture, plus the acids from the lemon rind makes it perfect for any stubborn stains!
