Easy Bathroom Swaps To Save The Planet & Your Money!
Part of Organica’s quest this Natural November is to embrace all the natural beauty our planet has to offer, from the skin-enhancing benefits of essential oils (like Bergamot and Lavender in our Dream Lotion) to the secret powers of nuts, and seeds (like our beloved Rosehip and Castor oils). All our ingredients are sustainably and ethically sourced, so you can be sure that the products you buy from us will not contain harmful components like palm oil, which contributes to the destruction of rainforests and animal species.
That said, unfortunately, much of the natural resources humans extract from our planet are not used in a way that can be kept up with. Globally, we produced over 1.4 billion tons of household waste a year, and in the US only 35% of our waste gets recycled. There’s a whole host of reasons for this, but a lot of it comes down to the cost of the entire recycling process, from educating the public about what gets recycled, to shipping and sorting waste for recycling.
Much of our waste instead ends up decomposing in landfills, emitting large amounts of methane into the atmosphere, or is burned ‘for energy’ - pumping more harmful chemicals (e.g. mercury and lead) into the air than coal plants do. Not to mention the fact it’s reported that the current 2000 active landfill sites in the US will run out of space in just 17 years; we’ve got a stinky problem on our hands!
So, whilst it’s still as important as ever to reduce, reuse, and recycle, we think a fourth ‘r’ is needed if we’re going to really make a difference to the plastic problem: refuse. This includes choosing products that contain less single-use plastics, such as bottles or disposable items like straws. We’re not really able to go completely plastic-free yet, as too many manufacturers rely on the cheap material for packaging all kinds of products, but we can definitely make a start without impacting our own wallets!
At Organica, we want to help you make great choices for your lifestyle and are committed to using high-quality, natural ingredients that bring out the best in your skin; it’s a bonus that we can also help you make better choices for the environment with your cosmetics too!
What’s more, eco-friendly alternatives are not only just as effective at boosting your natural beauty, they also have the double benefit of being travel-friendly. Super portable shampoo bars, soaps, and toothpaste tabs won’t break the budget, and save the hassle of buying wasteful and costly miniatures before your vacations!
Here’s our ultimate guide to eco-friendly bathroom swaps, refusing single-use plastics in favor of recycling-compatible components or reusable products, all from more sustainable ingredients:
Commonly bottled in plastic, shampoo is one of those bathroom essentials important to so many of us; the right treatment for your tresses can mean the difference between bouncy and shiny or dull, lifeless locks.
Organica’s research team wanted a way to combine the scalp-nourishing benefits of traditional shampoo with added natural advantages of a solid shampoo bar, which is how the ‘Sleepy Head Shampoo Bar’ came to life. Scientifically formulated with a blend of natural and powerful essential oils, the ultra-portable shampoo bar (in its lovely little reusable metal tin) will protect your lengths from breakage, and leave your hair healthier and your scalp free from product build-up. Just like our Dream Lotion, Sleepy Head is great to use when you need to relax, helping you unwind to a more calmer state after just one use.
Unlike the countless hair masks on the market sold in plastic tubs or even single-use foil packaging that cannot be recycled, we’ve got a little glass bottle of natural elixir, designed to restore your scalp to full health and help hair grow to its full potential. Give our Castor Oil a try.
Castor oil is mother nature’s secret weapon; a seed oil packed with powerful antioxidants, antibacterial properties, and amino acids. Just a few drops massaged into your scalp can soothe all manner of scalp concerns, such as itchy, oily or dandruff-prone skin. Treatment will enrich hair follicles, encouraging longer growth, whilst existing strands are reinforced and nourished to prevent breakage and give your hair that healthy glow.
Traditional toothpaste tubes are very difficult to recycle and take 500 to 700 years to decompose. Here’s where toothpaste ‘tablets’ or ‘tabs’ come in. Essentially, a toothpaste tablet is a portion of toothpaste in powdered formula, a bit like a pill. The packaging is cardboard, so it can be recycled easily, and it’s goodbye to the messy squeezing and wrenching the last little bits of toothpaste from a tube.
Toothpaste tabs still contain active plaque-removing ingredients like sodium bicarbonate, and many appreciate the fact they don’t contain fluoride. If you’re on the road a lot, then by far the best benefit has to be the travel-friendly nature of these little minty tabs, or you may even want to look into the mouthwash version as an alternative for keeping chewing gum in your handbag. They’re not widely available in stores everywhere just yet, but can be easily found online - why not have a toothpaste tab trial and let us know how you get on?
Over 3 billion plastic toothbrushes are thrown away every year worldwide, many of which end up floating in the sea or washed up on a beach. With the average person using 300 in their lifetime, that’s a whole lot of plastic pollution. Many of us are making the switch to bamboo toothbrushes as a result. Petroleum takes a lot of energy to manufacture into plastic toothbrushes, releases harmful toxins in the process, and is essentially non-biodegradable. Bamboo, on the other hand, is biodegradable, and the bristles used in bamboo toothbrushes are typically made from a more eco-friendly type of nylon than in the plastic toothbrush equivalent.
Another advantage of bamboo toothbrushes is that bamboo is naturally antimicrobial, so you’re going to limit bacterial growth by choosing this material over a plastic toothbrush.
If you’re already using an electric toothbrush, we wouldn’t recommend ditching this in favor of a bamboo toothbrush, as research suggests the rotation oscillation of the circular electric variety of toothbrushes has been key in cases of reduced plaque and gingivitis. There are companies who specialize in recyclable electric toothbrush heads with sustainable charcoal bristles, but if you’re looking for a disposable plastic brush upgrade, bamboo’s your guy.
Rosehip Oil Facial Treatment
At Organica, our beloved natural skincare facial treatment Rosehip Oil is packaged in a glass dropper bottle, which is more easily recycled than plastic counterparts sold by other cosmetics brands. In particular, we find a little goes a long way of our Rosehip Oil, so it’s the perfect addition to your eco-friendly bathroom routine.
Organic, cold-pressed Rosehip Oil is packed with Vitamins A, C, and E, all essential antioxidants in the fight against free-radical and environmental toxins. Just a few drops massaged into your skin after cleansing will encourage collagen production to help rejuvenate and lift aging, damaged skin, and can even resurface acne-prone or scarred skin. Despite being an oil, Rosehip is ideal for all skin types as there’s no greasy finish, just plenty of hydration and a beautiful, natural glow.
For many consumers, pre-moistened wipes are the solution to quick makeup removal at the end of the day. But most wet wipes contain plastic, so they are not suitable to be flushed down the toilet and will not biodegrade when they inevitably end up in a landfill. Fuss-free reusable makeup remover cloths or pads are a great alternative to this pesky plastic problem. Antimicrobial makeup removal cloths can be used, washed and reused plenty of times, as opposed to single-use disposable wipes, and are often much more effective than thin wipes, which can often tear as you attempt to prise the mascara from your lashes.
Cloth makeup removers are normally sold with travel-friendly packaging too, which makes them a convenient, portable option. Biodegradable makeup wipes are on the market if you’re not quite ready to make the transition to cloth removal, but we couldn’t recommend it more.
