Essential Oils To Help You Fight SAD

When winter starts to set in and the days grow shorter, it can have a massive impact on your mood. For some individuals, the change in season can prevent them from functioning normally if they don’t get the right treatment or support. For others, it may just seem like the ‘winter blues’, making you feel more tired, grumpy or a little down.

For 10 million Americans, the lack of sunlight in winter affects levels of hormones (mainly melatonin and serotonin) that controls your mood, sleep, and appetite (our Circadian Rhythm.)

This change in hormones can cause everything from depression, lack of energy, concentration problems, anxiety, overeating, loss of libido to sudden changes in mood. This is what is known as a Seasonal Affective Disorder. 

So, what do you do if you think you’re suffering from SAD?

There a few ways to remedy SAD, including anti-depressants and cognitive behavioral therapy. Luckily, there are also some natural remedies for SAD, including supplementing vitamin D, and the use of essential oils. So we’ve pulled together the oils that can help you make it through the cold winter months.

Bergamot

Bergamot oil works by improving the circulation in your blood, creating a feeling of joy and energy. In 2011, a study found that Bergamot oil worked as a natural remedy for anxiety in Rats. 

Another study in the same year showed that bergamot oil helped to treat depression. They measured the participants' blood pressure, pulse rates, breathing rates, and skin temperature and had them rate their emotional state. They found that, compared with a placebo, the blend of essential oils caused a significant decrease in pulse rate and blood pressure and the participants found themselves feeling calmer and relaxed than the other control group.

Lavender

This particular test was on bergamot blended with another Lavender oil, as well. Lavender has been long used to help remedy depression. While so many treatments for depression have side effects, there are no adverse side effects from using Lavender.

A study carried out in 2012 studied 28 women who were at high risk for postpartum depression, and discovered that those who used a Lavender oil diffuser in their house significantly decreased their depression and anxiety through a four-week Lavender aromatherapy plan. 

Ylang Ylang

Another essential oil that works to help remedy symptoms of SAD is Ylang Ylang, as it has been shown to have immediate and positive effects on your mood, acting as a mild anti-depressant. It works as it has mild sedative effects, lowering the stress response that causes anxiety too and helping you to relax.
