Five Things You Should Avoid Before Bedtime
Having trouble sleeping lately? Not getting enough shut-eye can lead to a multitude of health problems, as well as low mood, a weakened immune system and that groggy feeling the next day. If you’re often tossing and turning, or struggle to stay asleep, avoid these 5 things before your bedtime…
1. Processed Foods
Greasy, heavy foods that are high in sugar and fat will not only make you feel sluggish in the morning, but will also make your stomach work over-time during the night. This digestive discomfort can cause difficulty in sleeping, and keep you awake for longer.
2. Screen Staring
Laptops, phones, iPads… in fact, any kind of electrical device… emits a blue light which has been proven to keep you awake. It stimulates to brain, making it hard to relax and unwind, and leaves the body in alert-mode. Opt for a paper book or try some meditating instead.
3. Intense Exercise
Exercising regularly is key to improving your sleep, but hitting the gym right before you’re about to sleep isn’t the best idea! The increase in your heart rate, plus the surge of endorphins you get when you work-out, can lead to us feeling more awake and more energised that before the gym! For a better sleep, finish your work out around 2-3 hours before you hit the hay.
4. Curb the Caffeine
Caffeine found in coffee, tea, cola and even chocolate is a stimulant designed to keep you alert and awake. Your body can only metabolise so much caffeine at a time, so a good rule of thumb is to have your final cup of joe 6 hours before sleep.
5. Keep Calm and Sleep On
Any kind of heightened emotion will bring on anxiety, stress and prevent you from relaxing into a deep sleep. From bickering with your partner, to watching a disturbing TV show, any kind of mental stress will stop you getting on the road to relaxation.
