How the Autumn Equinox Affects Your Sleep
On September 22nd we had our Autumn Equinox which means that yes, it is officially autumn. But, how does this transition into colder months affect our sleep?
Firstly, what is Autumn Equinox?
Autumn Equinox is when day and night are in perfect balance because there is no tilt to the earth’s axis, meaning it’s stood up straight and signals that the days are beginning to shorten.
For animals, sun light dictates everything from feeding and hunting, to reproduction and migration. Even though we have electricity and 24-hour shops, light can still have a profound effect on how we feel and what we do. Take SAD for instance (Seasonal Affective Disorder) the mood disorder which is caused by a lack of sunlight, and therefore vitamin D, when the seasons change. No amount of artificial light can prevent the seasons from affecting us mentally or physically.
Which is why the Autumn Equinox still has an effect on our sleeping pattern.
The Autumn Equinox brings about hypersomnia in a lot of people, which means excessive daytime sleepiness. This happens because the switch to shorter daylight hours disrupts your body clock, and will mostly happen without you really noticing. It simply means your circadian rhythm is re-setting to adjust to the changes in daylight.
Because our bodies are telling us to wind down and making us feel tired in the day, it’s good to consciously tune in to our body and take some time to relax at the end of the day and accept we might feel a little more tired than we normally do.
Because so many modern inventions mean we can continue to live without really noticing or changing our behaviors when the daylight hours are shortened, it’s even more important now to tune in to what your body clock is telling you as you can then find yourself feeling overly tired, without really knowing why.
What else does the Autumn Equinox effect?
Along with a change in our sleep cycle, Autumn equinox can affect our immune system (winter colds anyone?), cause skin irritation, a change in appetite, dehydration, and even make it harder for you to concentrate.
The most important thing you can do is to listen to your body, continue exercising and support your body in the most natural way because, as beautiful as Fall is, it can really have a negative effect on your mind and body. Finding a slightly different routine, where you get more sleep and making sure you have a bit more downtime, is the best way to cope with the change in season, as well as exercising to improve your mood.
To really ensure you’re supporting your body throughout the change of season we have a few of our best-selling products to boost your mood and to help settle your body clock. If you’re struggling with hypersomnia, then our Pure Energy Oil Roller, filled with mood enhancing bergamot, orange and grapefruit oil, is a great way to fight the sluggish morning or midday feeling.
Similarly, if you’re feeling sluggish throughout the day, it might be a sign that now the weather is turning you need more sleep than you used to.
