Relaxation Tips For The Festive Period

Where there’s Christmas cheer, there’s cortisol (your stress hormone), so we’ve compiled the best relaxation tips so you can enjoy the festive period, without the stress and anxiety.

If you suffer from low energy, headaches or bloating, you could be suffering from regular stress, which is incredibly common around this time of year. Sometimes it's not obvious when you feel stressed, so if you suffer from these symptoms, give these tips a go!

To cope through one of the busiest months of the year, it’s important you take some time to check in with yourself and make sure that amongst all the festivities, your cortisol levels aren’t getting out of control.

First of all, start with your breath

Easy, right? You breathe all day every day without thinking, so this one shouldn’t be too hard! But, it’s important to note that breathwork is very different to regular breathing. Breathwork means using your breath to change your mental, physical or emotional state, and it can be very powerful. When you understand how to use breathwork, you can reduce stress, increase energy levels and overall improve your sleep, creativity and health. 

But if you’re not sure where to start, here’s a simple technique to get you started:

1. Breathe in through your nose for 5 seconds

2. Hold your breath for 5 seconds

3. Exhale for 5

4. Hold your breath for 5

5. Repeat for at least three minutes or until you feel calm

Get Creative

If you can’t seem to crack yoga or breathing techniques, find something creative that allows you to turn off from the stressful world around you can focus on the here and now. Things like drawing and coloring can really allow you to zone out for a while, helping you to forget what you’re feeling stressed about. Try a few of these that tickle your fancy:

Calligraphy, Dancing, Listening to music, Pottery, Knitting, Gardening, Cross stitching, Writing, Sewing or Collaging!

Get Outside

Seems like a simple thing but getting yourself outside (the busy high street doesn’t count) can work wonders. 

As our lives become more and more hectic, it’s important to sometimes go outside and be aware of your environment, rather than heading out just to get from A-B as quickly as possible.

So head out for a walk, and when you do, look up at things around you. Try to take yourself to somewhere quiet and surrounded by nature. Re-focus and you’ll find you might just feel less stressed.

Sweat, sweat, sweat 

Not a new one, but definitely one that works. Years of research has shown that physical activity is one of the most effective ways to fight stress and anxiety.

After exercising, you’ll experience a rush of endorphins, also known as the ‘happy hormone.’ It will boost your mood, helping you feel on top of the world and lower those cortisol levels.

If heading to the gym isn’t your favorite activity, try swimming or a Pilates class, which will still have the same effect on your body, but maybe won’t leave you quite as sweaty as an intensive gym session.
