6 Showering Tips To Help You Sleep
When it comes to getting a good night sleep, you might be focusing too much on your bedroom atmosphere or keeping away from caffeine after 2pm (although we’re not denying that these are important) - but have you ever thought about your bathing habits, too? Baths are definitely a go-to when it comes to winding down at the end of the day, and they’re a great way to de-stress, but simply having a quick shower before bed can also work wonders!
As well as getting us clean and ready for bed, showering alters our body temperature, which plays such an important role in our sleep rhythm. This means they can help deepen our sleep and get us to the dreamland faster, hooray!
For 5 things to switch up when it comes to your shower and your sleep, keep reading…
1. Make Sure It's HOT
Most people enjoy showers in the morning, claiming they help refresh us and get us ready for our day ahead, but if you’re struggling to fall asleep, a hot shower before bed could actually work wonders...
When you step out of a hot shower, your body temperature dramatically drops, mimicking the natural dip in core temperature that happens when we sleep. This feeling will trigger your body clock, and ease you into a deeper sleep... fast!
2. Meditation Time
If you struggle to set aside some time for meditation or mindfulness, try using your time in the shower as a way to wind down and switch off. Having a few moments where you slow your breathing, clear your mind and mentally prepare for bed will help enormously when it comes to drifting off. A lot of us end up getting into bed without any unwind-time, but to then expect our body to switch off is pretty unrealistic. So have your shower an hour or so before your desired bedtime and once you’re out, don’t look at any computers, TVs or phone screens for the rest of the night.
3. Get 'Jelly' With It
Using our Shower Jelly will work to not only cleanse your skin, leaving it smoother and softer, but the blend of essential oils will restore a sense of calm.
With Lavender Oil to help relax the mind and body, and Chamomile Oil to soothe and nourish your skin, this is the perfect companion for your pre-bedtime shower, or to relax you in the morning. It smells divine, too!
4. Be Patient
As mentioned before, a hot shower can really help ease your body into sleep as the drop in temperature can signal to your body that it’s time for rest. But you need to give yourself some time to allow this drop in temperature to happen, so shower ideally an hour before your desired bedtime.
5. Use Our Lavender Solid Shampoo Bar
Although you might think you can only use essential oils in baths, you can actually use the power of lavender while you shower, too! At Organica, we've created our ‘Sleepy Head’ Shampoo Bar, made from world-class, natural essential oils that not only work as a gentle cleanser for your hair, but will help you relax and sleep better, too!
The bar contains lavender oil, one of nature's most powerful relaxants, and a number of other hair-nourishing oils like lemon, lime, and jojoba. With the hair-cleansing equivalent of 3 plastic bottles per bar, it's a treat to our planet, as well as your locks!
6. Refreshing Wake-Up
Taking a cool shower in the morning when you wake up will really help improve that groggy feeling we sometimes get. The cooler temperature triggers your body to send warm blood to the main organs and brain, causing you to feel much more alert and awake. Ensuring you wake up alert will help you unwind at night, too, as it supports your natural wake-sleep cycle.
Switching up your showering routine can make an enormous difference to your sleep, and it’s important to use your shower-time to really prepare your mind and body for rest. Remember to keep your shower hot, your room cool, and you will be drifting off to dreamsville before you know it!
