The Ultimate Anti-Aging Guide

There will be a day in our lives where we’ll look at ourselves in the mirror and suddenly realize we’re not 21 anymore! You may have noticed that parts of your body have started to change…be it the new collection of grey hairs, the odd wrinkle or parts that might not be holding up where they once did a few years ago! It’s okay, though! It’s happening and going to happen to us all. Aging is a very normal part of life, but if we can find ways to help us age gracefully and at a rate that we are comfortable with, then we should explore these options…

A few things can be done to help ease the break on the aging process. I can’t tell you how to stop the process completely, but I can give you a few suggestions on how to make yourself feel and look younger, both inside and out!

Here are a few hints and tips on how to start helping your body age the way you will be happy with. Remember, we all age and some things are inevitable, but we might as well slow down as much as we can while we can, right?

Let’s talk about skin!

Our skin can be the first thing to start showing signs of aging, so I thought it would be a good idea to start there. The older we get; our skin will start to look a little different – it’s just a fact of life. We will start to wrinkle, crease and get the odd discoloration on our faces, hands, and feet. There is an abundance of lotions, creams, and serums available to us in the local drugstore and supermarket, all promising to help reduce wrinkles and turn back the clock on our bodies - but are they always doing the job?

Moisture, Moisture, and More Moisture…

A great way to keep your skin looking and feeling young is to moisturize! It is simple…the more moisture in the skin, the less likely it is to become dry and crease - two main causes of wrinkles and mature looking skin. Once you’re out the shower, apply a generous layer of lotion within three minutes – making sure the water on your skin hasn’t fully evaporated yet! In doing this, you’ll actually help seal some of the hydration from the water and get all the benefits from the moisturizer, too.

Moisturizers and serums are your go-to for adding hydration to your skin. Our very own Superfood Firming Serum is perfect for improving the skin's elasticity and moisture, diminishing fine line and wrinkles! Once you start doing this every day, you’ll see quite the difference.

Exfoliate…

Our skin’s regeneration can slow down as we age, so when we exfoliate, we can assist this process. Using exfoliants with ultrafine beads and grains help remove dead skin, revealing the smoother, younger skin below. Try to exfoliate at least twice a week – ideally in the morning – with a natural exfoliator. This will help your skin to continue rejuvenating and producing new, younger skin.

TIP: When you’re exfoliating, don’t scrub too hard! You will cause more damage to your skin than good.

Let’s get Oily…

Similar to making sure our skin has an abundance of hydration from a moisturizer, we can also use oil to achieve the same effect. Some lotions aren’t as long-lasting, so an oil product would suit better. I know the idea of putting oil on your skin seems strange – we are told from a young age that we have breakouts due to oil! But, in fact, we need certain oils in our skin to help avoid spots, reduce wrinkles and fine lines [1]. Our very own Rosehip Seed Oil has plenty of anti-aging benefits, packed with vitamins and collagen (the vital building block for keeping elasticity and firmness in your skin), this product will help your skin stay young and put a break on the wheel of time.

Hands Up…

A lot of us can be guilty of giving our face all the attention when it comes to a bit of TLC, but our hands need it just as much. Hands can age faster than our faces, developing dark spots and showing changes in the texture i.e. wrinkles.[2] Keep your hands moisturized - ideally more than once a day to keep the skin supple. You can use your normal face creams on your hands, too, or buy a specific hand cream for optimum absorption.

TIP: The sun can cause a lot of damage to our skin, particularly on our hands and face! Get yourself a cream with a high SPF to protect yourself from harmful UV rays.

Remember Your Eyes…

When it comes to the skin on our face, the first signs of aging with normally start around the most expressive and active features; our eyes, forehead, and mouth. There isn’t too much that can be done about that unless you’re willing to live your life avoiding emotion…not a great idea! Your eyes will fall victim first. This is due to the fact that the skin around our eyes is thinner - quick to lose elasticity and firmness. It is very important to take care of this fragile skin by using creams suited for your sensitive skin around your eyes.

Ditch the Straw…

Something as simple as scrapping the straw when you order a drink could help reduce the wrinkles around your mouth and lips. Makes sense, doesn’t it? The more you pierce your lips around the narrow tip, the more your skin is wrinkling and creasing…so avoid, avoid, avoid! It’s something small but very effective!

Let’s Talk About Nutrition

Putting the right things into your body can be extremely beneficial in helping slow down the clock! There are lots of foods you can eat that will influence how quickly our bodies will age, both inside and out. We can get stuck focusing all our time on making sure the outside of our body stays looking young, but we need to look after what’s inside too. The plus side to this is that what you put into your body can also do miracles on the outside!

Drink Tea, The Green Kind…

Green tea is high in antioxidants called polyphenols which are known to fight off inflammation and heart disease – bonus! These antioxidants can also help protect the protein in our skin called collagen. Collagen is needed to help our skin stay wrinkle free and moist. So, now that you know green tea is packed with this antioxidant, it’s no wonder so many of us are drinking a cup a couple of times a week.

Sweet, Sweet Honey…

That glorious golden syrup has more benefits then satisfying our sweet tooth! This wonderful, natural substance is packed with antioxidants, anti-bacterial properties and amino acids (extremely beneficial to our muscles and liver function). Honey is incredible for hydrating the skin which means fewer wrinkles and fine lines!

Blueberries…

All berries contain crucial antioxidants, but blueberries are the absolute winner! The reason blueberries are blue is due to anthocyanins (natural pigments in food that give them red, blue or purple coloring) which has its benefits to our skin that has been affected by UV exposure! So, this means that blueberries contain ‘healing powers’ that could help reduce any wrinkles or blemishes cause by the sun!

Let’s Talk About Lifestyle!

Stop Smoking…

This is rather obvious. Not only does smoking affect your insides and increase your risk of cancer, but it also does terrible things to your skin and can make you look a lot older than you are!

If I knew that I was doing something that was making me age quicker, I would make me want to stop!

Get your body active…

An active body is a huge plus to helping keep our mind and body in a healthy place [3]. Exercise can make you not only look younger but will make you feel younger! When you’re working up a sweat, you’re actually feeding your skin beneficial hydration. Staying active will also improve your posture (no slouching), increase flexibility and helps pump your blood into all of your extremities and organs!

Drink plenty of water…

Keeping your body hydrated on the inside is fundamental to keeping ourselves fit, young and healthy! Not drinking enough water can leave your skin looking dull, dry and wrinkled…all the things we want to avoid! Make sure you drink plenty of water every day! Hydrated skin will always be happy skin!

Conclusion

Knowing that we all age isn’t a nice thought for a lot of us, but knowing that there are things that can be done is a huge weight off our minds. If you keep your mind and body active and healthy - inside and out - you’ll notice such a difference in your skin, mood, and overall wellness. The sooner you put these things into action the better you will be in the future. Like I said at the beginning, I can’t tell you how to stop the aging process completely, but I can help you navigate your way through prolonging it while keeping yourself healthy at the same time.
