This Bean IS The Secret To Keeping Your Skin Looking Young!
Our lives can sometimes get a little busy. With some mornings starting in the early hours, and late nights that can continue into the next day, it’s very easy for us to burn ourselves out. With each and every long day, we can find ourselves rather exhausted both mentally and physically – which will do no favors for our skin!
From a recent survey, 64 percent of Americans confessed to drinking at least one cup of coffee every day! That’s a huge amount of us sipping away on those warm, creamy (if that’s how you take it) coffees. Most of us will drink coffee for the boost of energy and enhancement of focus, but what about using the coffee to help look after your skin? And that’s not by drinking it!
It’s time for us all to discover the amazing, rejuvenating effects adding coffee to your daily skin care routine can do for your body, lifestyle, and health…
Where Does Coffee Come From?
Coffee is grown on large bushes and is produced from a seed, usually referred to as a ‘bean’ in its most organic form. Coffee only comes from specific species of Coffea plants, but we normally get our beans from the genus Coffea. These beans are grown and harvested in the tropical areas of Africa, South America and many other countries along the equator belt. Once collected, the beans are roasted and ground into small granules - what you'll normally buy at the grocery store for your morning cup of Joe.
The Benefits Of Using Coffee On Your Skin…
Coffee is packed with caffeine - it’s what stimulates the central nervous system and helps make our brains function at a higher rate . But when applied to the skin, it doesn't have quite the same effect. Instead, the natural properties of the coffee act as an antioxidant, protecting the skin and helping it reform to a more youthful, blemish-free state.
1. Stimulates Blood Flow
When we digest coffee as a drink, the caffeine will stimulate our minds and makes us more alert and reactive to our surroundings, but we don’t get the same effects when we apply caffeine to our skin. As we scrub coffee into our complexion, in a circular motion, the caffeine and the physical motion will stimulate the blood flow in our skin. Similarly, to the positive results of a massage, with the added bonus of helping diminish cellulite, reduce stretch marks and can even help fight acne.
Top Tip: If you think of your cup of coffee, there needs to be hot water added to the coffee beans to give the drinkable result. With that in mind, you should treat your body in a similar way. Jump in the shower, and your body will naturally open up the pores, this is the perfect time to apply the coffee scrub to your skin. The open pores will absorb the natural, skin rejuvenating properties through the hair follicles.
2. A Natural Exfoliator
It’s very simple; the physical texture of coffee grounds is slightly rough, very much like your standard beauty scrubs from the drug store. When coffee is freshly roasted and ground down, it is an amazing natural exfoliator – buffing dry and dead skin cells which will enhance the skin's rejuvenation process. Exfoliating the top layer of dead skin away will reveal brighter, fresher, younger-looking skin underneath. The plus side with using coffee to exfoliate is that it is a lot more powerful than the scrubs you can buy, and doesn't damage the environment in the way that plastic beads do. Due to the harder texture, coffee is a lot harsher than a sugar or gel exfoliant. So coffee is more likely to buff away the dry and flaky skin quicker than anything else leaving behind smoother, more refined skin.
3. Protects From Free Radicals
Free radicals…they are an enemy to our skin! To protect and look after our skin, we need to make sure we find barriers to these molecules that can induce early aging in our skin. Not good! Luckily, coffee is packed with antioxidants, which are the best natural warrior to fight and keep the free radicals at bay. Those granules of coffee will help turn back the time on imperfections and will brighten the skin, leaving you with a beautiful, healthy glow.
4. The Perfect Natural Balance
Finding the perfect product for your skin can take time and a lot of trial and error. Most of us have spent countless hours trying to find the perfect match, only to find our dry skin becoming too oily or vice versa. This is where coffee can come to the rescue. The pH balance of our skin is incredibly important, the last thing you want to do is disrupt the natural balance, causing more unwanted issues. Coffee has the same pH level as your skin, which means that when used as an exfoliant, it will leave your skin feeling the perfect balance of oily and dry.
How Do You Use Coffee On Your Skin?
The best thing about using coffee on your skin is that you don’t have to waste any time pre-preparing a mixture. Depending on your receptacle, fill up to 1/8 with coffee granules. You don’t need too much, just enough to cover the area of skin you wish to treat. Gently rub the grounds into your skin and let it work its magic! The crumbly scrub will remove dead, blemished, dry skin, leaving you with smoother, plumper and refreshed skin.
Top Tip: If you’re finding the granules too harsh and aggressive, add a little olive oil or coconut oil to the grounds and mix into a paste. We would recommend anyone with sensitive skin to try this approach first.
Why not make a delicious home-made coffee face mask? Add a generous splash of milk or yogurt to two tablespoons of freshly ground coffee and complete with a tablespoon of honey. Gently massage the mixture into your skin, leave for 15 minutes and rinse off thoroughly. The coffee will leave your skin with tighter pores and help reduce any puffiness as the smooth honey and milk will help by adding moisture.
So, it turns out coffee isn’t just tasty, it’s also amazing for keeping our skin youthful, smooth and vibrant. Add some grounds to your morning or evening beauty regime and you’ll notice your skin changing for the better in no time. Why not pair your morning coffee with a reviving facial to wake up your skin – double the flavor and double the benefit!
