What Happens To Your Body After Having An Energy Drink

Ever wondered what an energy drink does to your body? It's been shown that they can affect you for up to 9 days after consumption, causing some serious long-term effects if you consume them regularly. There's also been a 279% increase in energy drink consumption in people over the age of 40 over the past few years... a shocking statistic.

With so many people consuming energy drinks every day, we decided to look into what actually happens from the first 10 minutes after you crack open a can, to the next few years (if you're a regular drinker). And while the results are shocking, we have some great natural alternatives for you, so you can kick the habit. Keep reading to find out more.

So here's what happens...

10 Minutes After Consuming An Energy Drink:

After drinking an energy drink, it takes about 10 minutes for the stimulants to enter your bloodstream. They cause your heart rate and blood pressure to rise, as well as the levels of your stress hormone. Worryingly, they can also cause your blood to thicken, which can not only lead to strokes in the long run, but also cause fatigue, dizziness and headaches in the short-term.

15-45 Minutes Later...

This is when your caffeine levels peak: you’ll feel more alert and your ability to concentrate improves. But it's not all superhero brain-power and energy...

A study by the International Journal of Health Sciences showed that caffeine doses around 200 milligrams and above can be linked to caffeine intoxication. Symptoms of this include anxiety, insomnia and restlessness. To give you an idea, energy drinks contain around 100-200 milligrams of caffeine, which means that you need just one energy drink to cause caffeine intoxication.

30-50 Minutes In...

By now, all of the caffeine has been absorbed, and your liver responds by absorbing more sugar into the bloodstream.

The main ingredient in energy drinks is caffeine, but they also contain up to 30 grams of sugar in every 250 ml. This is already way over the suggested sugar daily intake for a woman, and only 8 grams less than a man's entire daily dose. This added sugar itself can cause long-term problems like weight gain, diabetes and an increased risk of heart disease.

1 Hour After Drinking...

This is when the crash happens! This means you’ll start to feel tired and your energy levels will dip. Your concentration will waiver, you may feel light-headed, and you'll definitely be craving sugar. Was the caffeine peak really worth the dip?

5-6 Hours Later...

It takes 5-6 hours for your body to reduce the amount of caffeine by 50%. So there’s still 50% of the caffeine in your body at this point. Some individuals who are more caffeine sensitive, may have even more of the stimulant still in their blood stream. Keeping your heart rate raised for this long can have a damaging effect on your ticker.

12 Hours In...

This is when most people have managed to remove the caffeine completely from their body. The speed of this can change depending on a lot of things, such as age and activity, but generally speaking, after 12 hours your body will have done all it can to process and remove all of the stimulants from your energy drink.

12-24 Hours After Drinking...

Up to 24 hours later, the withdrawal symptoms will kick in, which include headaches, irritability and constipation. This is why some people can become hooked on drinking these harmful drinks, and reach for another one the next day.

24 Hours +

For about an hour of increased energy, there are side effects that can ultimately effect you for years. Continued consumption of energy drinks can increase the risk of heart disease and strokes, not to mention the immediate side effects after the sugar crash, such as irritability, anxiety, restlessness, and insomnia.
